There are many different types of paper shredders ranging from small, inexpensive units that shred a few sheets of papers into thin strips through to large heavy duty paper shredders that can shred a ream of paper into micro strips (or confetti) of paper. Depending on how much paper you need to shred at once or how secure you want your shredding to be defines the shredding machine you need. Security Levels of a paper shredder
There are 3 main types of shredding found on paper shredders that are used in the home or office. These are Strip-Cut, Crosscut and Confetti. These terms are used to give an indication of what the paper shredder shreds the paper into and also give an indication of what security level (DIN level) they fall into.
- Strip Cut Din security levels DIN1 and DIN2. Cuts an A4 sheet into strips.
- Crosscut Din Security level DIN3. Cuts an A4 sheet into hundreds of little pieces.
- Confetti (Micro Shred) Din security level DIN4 and DIN5. Cuts an A4 sheet into thousands of little pieces.
- DIN1 Basic paper shredding, strip-cut an A4 sheet into approx 7mm strips, 30 per A4 sheet.
- DIN2 Standard paper shredding, strip-cut an A4 sheet into approx 5.8mm strips, 36 per A4 sheet.
- DIN3 Higher paper shredding, cross-cut an A4 sheet into approx 3.9x50mm particles, 320 per A4 sheet.
- DIN4 / DIN5 Superior paper shredding, confetti cut an A4 sheet into approx 2x15mm particles, 2000 pieces per A4 sheet.
Once you have decided what security level you want to shred your paper into, you then need to consider the amount of use the paper shredder will get. To help with this, we have categorised our paper shredders to give an indication of how much shredding a paper shredder will take. This takes into account quantity of paper and runtime.
- Home Shredders Low, occasional use. 1-5 users.
- Personal Shredders Low volumes on a daily basis. 1-5 users.
- Office Shredders Low to medium use. 5-10 users.
- Heavy Duty Shredders Medium to High volumes. 10-20 users.
- Departmental Shredders High volumes. 20+ users.
