Paper Hand Towel Buying Guide: Folded Towels, Rolls & Dispensers
Find the right paper towel for your washroom.
Compare folded paper towels, hand towel rolls and the dispensers that suit them. Explore the AOS range across 2Work, Katrin, Scott, Kleenex, Lucart, Cheeky Panda, Leonardo, Raphael, Tork and more.
Start with your dispenser. Choose its approved folded towel or roll refill, then compare drying performance, capacity and cost. For folded towels, check the fold and folded dimensions. For rolls, check the system, roll dimensions and fittings. If buying a new dispenser, choose the unit and its compatible refills together.

Choose the product type you need, then use the category filters to compare brands and specifications.
Folded towels are supplied as stacks of individual sheets. Roll systems feed paper from a roll and may control the length presented. For an existing installation, refill compatibility comes first. For a new washroom, compare wall space, capacity, ease of use and the time needed for replenishment; there is no universal winner.
C-fold vs Z-fold vs V-fold: what is the difference?
The fold affects the space a towel occupies and how sheets are presented. These simplified diagrams show the fold arrangements partly open; they are not to scale.
Stacked individual sheets
C-fold hand towels
The edges fold towards the centre on the same side. Sheets usually sit in a stack rather than being interleaved, so users may need to open the towel after taking it.
Buying tip: Useful when you already have a suitable C-fold dispenser. Check the folded footprint before changing products.
Single fold / interleaved
V-fold hand towels
A sheet folded once into two panels. In an interleaved stack, pulling out a towel helps bring the next sheet forward.
Buying tip: Look for the correct folded width and depth. V-fold, singlefold and interfold wording varies between suppliers.
Zigzag / usually three panels
Z-fold hand towels
Typically folded into three panels in alternating directions. Sheets interleave so the next towel is presented as one is removed.
Buying tip: A practical option for compatible dispensers designed to present individual sheets. A Z-fold name alone does not confirm fit.
Names can overlap
Multifold & interfold
Multifold describes products with several panels; interfold describes how sheets overlap in the stack. A Z-fold towel may also be labelled multifold or interfold.
Buying tip: M-fold and W-fold formats also occur. Compare the manufacturer’s specification and dispenser model, not just the wording.
A useful distinction: “interfold” is not one universal size. Similar names, colours or pack shapes do not guarantee that two refills are interchangeable.

What to check
C-fold
Usually stacked as separate folded sheets.
Approved fold and folded footprint.
V-fold / singlefold
Interleaved products help present the next sheet.
Stack width, depth and loading direction.
Z-fold / multifold
Alternating folds, usually with overlapping sheets.
Exact format, dimensions and dispenser model.
M-fold / W-fold / interfold
Names cover different manufacturer formats.
Product specification rather than the label alone.
How do I choose hand towel rolls?
Start with the roll dispenser model and its approved refill list. The AOS range includes washroom roll systems from brands such as Katrin, Scott, Kleenex, Leonardo, Raphael, Cheeky Panda and Tork. Check the intended use: the wider rolls category also contains industrial wiping products.
System and fittings: check the approved refill code, core and spindle or end-plug arrangement. A similar-looking roll may not load or feed correctly.
Roll dimensions: compare width and maximum outside diameter with the dispenser specification. A longer roll must still fit the unit.
Paper and dispensing: check ply, roll length and whether the dispenser cuts or meters the paper. Confirm any stated sheet count or sheet length before comparing value.
Replenishment: compare capacity, spare-roll storage and any stub-roll feature that lets the remaining paper be used during changeover.
Check approved folds, stack dimensions and capacity. Compare wall-mounted or countertop designs, the space needed to open the cover and the ease of refilling.
Compare options from 2Work, Katrin, Aquarius, Kimberly-Clark, Cheeky Panda and Tork in the category below. Check the individual model’s approved towel formats.
Check the roll system and fittings, then compare manual levers, mechanical paper presentation or electronic sensors. Confirm power requirements: touch-free dispensing does not always mean battery-operated.
Compare options from Aquarius, Leonardo, Katrin, Cheeky Panda and Tork in the category below. Choose a dispenser and its approved roll refills together.
Compare the complete installation: dispenser size, wall space, refill availability, lock and key, capacity and maintenance. Check that the listing is for a complete dispenser; faceplates and accessories may be sold separately.
Which hand towels fit my dispenser?
Record these details before you reorder or change brands. Keep a photograph of a working refill label with your purchasing records.
Identify the dispenserFind the brand, model or article number on the unit or its instructions. A brand name alone may cover several incompatible systems.
Check the refill dimensionsFor folded towels, check folded width and depth. For rolls, check width, outside diameter and core or spindle fittings. An unfolded sheet size or roll length alone does not confirm fit.
Match the refill formatCheck the approved fold or roll system, refill code and loading instructions. Keep the code from a refill that already dispenses correctly.
Check before buying in volumeIf changing products, confirm suitability first and trial a small quantity where practical before ordering for every location.
Can I change brands? Only when the dispenser specification permits the proposed refill. Some units accept a range of folded towels; others use dedicated refills. Even products from the same manufacturer can belong to different systems.
A specific roll-system example: Kimberly-Clark lists Scott Slimroll 6695 among the refills for the Aquarius Slimroll 7955 dispenser. That does not make every Scott or Kleenex roll compatible with every Aquarius model.
Ply means the number of paper layers. One-ply, two-ply and three-ply products are available, but ply alone does not tell you how many towels people will use.
Compare sheet size, fibre, absorbency and strength in use. An effective towel that needs fewer sheets may offer better value despite a higher carton price.
Colour & material
White, blue, green and natural-coloured towels are available. Colour alone does not prove recycled content, food-contact suitability or drying performance.
Check each product’s material and stated specifications. Choose the appearance that suits your washroom after confirming fit and performance.
Recycled paper & bamboo
Compare verified recycled content, fibre sourcing, packaging and product-specific certifications. Bamboo or a natural colour does not, by itself, establish a lower overall environmental impact.
Follow your workplace waste contractor’s guidance for used towels; do not assume that recycled content makes a used towel suitable for normal paper recycling.
Cartons, sleeves & storage
For folded towels, check total sheets per carton as well as sleeves per pack. For rolls, check the number of rolls and length per roll. Similar pack descriptions can contain different amounts of paper.
Allow dry storage space and set a reorder point around actual usage and delivery lead times. Keep opened sleeves protected from splashes.
How do I compare the cost of folded towels and rolls?
Use the same VAT basis and quantity price for each option. Comparing carton prices alone can be misleading when the number of sheets differs.
Cost per 1,000 sheets
Carton price ÷ total sheets in the carton × 1,000
Illustrative option
Carton price, ex VAT
Total sheets
Cost per 1,000
Carton A
£24.00
3,000
£8.00
Carton B
£28.80
4,000
£7.20
Illustrative figures only, not current AOS prices. Delivery charges are excluded. Use the actual sheet count and applicable selling price for your order.
For rolls: compare cost per 100 metres
Cost per 100 metres
Case price ÷ (rolls per case × metres per roll) × 100
For example, a £36 case containing six 150m rolls has 900m of paper and costs £4 per 100m. This is an illustrative calculation, not a current AOS price. Compare roll width and paper grade too; 100m of a narrower roll is not the same amount of paper.
For a system that dispenses a known sheet length, you can estimate sheets per roll from roll length divided by that sheet length, using the same units. Use the manufacturer’s stated yield where available. Cost per 100m cannot be compared directly with cost per 1,000 folded sheets.
Then compare cost in use. Record how quickly each compatible towel is used, how often dispensers need refilling and whether sheets are wasted. A lower cost per sheet does not automatically mean a lower washroom bill.
Why do hand towels jam or dispense badly?
Before switching products, check compatibility and how the dispenser is loaded. Follow the instructions for the particular model.
Check the stack
Use the approved refill size and fold.
Load in the specified direction.
Keep sheets aligned and remove any packaging.
Respect the fill level instead of squeezing extra sleeves in.
Check the dispenser
Remove loose scraps from the outlet.
Check for damp paper and keep spare stock dry.
Look for damaged guides or a sticking cover.
If it still dispenses poorly, consult the model’s troubleshooting guidance.
For a roll that will not feed: check that it is an approved refill and is threaded in the specified direction. Check the power supply on electronic models and follow the model’s loading and fault guidance.

Shop paper hand towels by brand
Choose a brand to browse its matching hand towel range at AOS. Each image, brand name and button opens a search for that brand’s hand towels. The pictured towel is an example from the range.
To narrow your choice: brand searches may include folded towels, rolls and dispensers. Use the search results’ Product Category filter, or open one of the towel categories below. In the folded-towel category, compare the Brand, Fold Type and Ply filters. Always check the selected refill’s dimensions and dispenser compatibility.
Plan stock and refill checks around busy periods. Record the correct towel for each dispenser and make it easy for staff to identify the right carton.
Offices & visitor facilities
Balance drying comfort, reliable dispensing and the appearance you want. Compare actual usage before deciding whether a different paper grade is better value.
Cleaning contractors & facilities teams
Keep a location-by-location refill list. Include the dispenser model, product code, carton quantity and the point at which stock should be reordered.
Bulk & regular purchasing
Ask AOS about quantity quotations, multibuy pricing on selected lines and business credit accounts. Share expected usage and delivery locations when requesting bespoke pricing.
Next-day delivery is available on eligible stocked products, subject to location and order conditions. Check the product listing and delivery information when planning replenishment.
Paper hand towel questions answered
Should I choose folded hand towels or hand towel rolls?
Match an existing dispenser first. Folded towels use a stack of sheets; roll systems feed paper from a roll and may control the length dispensed. For a new installation, compare refill capacity, available wall space, ease of use, maintenance and total usage costs. Neither format is automatically the best choice for every washroom.
Will any hand towel roll fit my dispenser?
No. Check the exact dispenser model and approved refill codes, plus roll width, outside diameter and core or spindle fittings. Roll length and ply alone do not confirm compatibility, even when two products carry the same brand.
Do folded towels and towel rolls need different dispensers?
Normally yes. Folded-towel dispensers hold a stack of sheets, while roll dispensers use a mechanism designed for a specified roll format. Check the model and refill specification before purchasing either a new dispenser or replacement towels.
Can I use another brand of hand towel in my dispenser?
Sometimes, if the dispenser specification permits it and the refill has the approved format, dimensions and fittings. Other dispensers use a dedicated system. Confirm compatibility for the exact products; matching colour, ply or brand name is not sufficient.
Does a touch-free hand towel dispenser need batteries?
Not always. Some dispensers present the next towel mechanically when a sheet is pulled, while electronic sensor models may need batteries or another power supply. Check the product specification and include its servicing needs when comparing options.
What is the difference between C-fold and Z-fold hand towels?
C-fold sheets usually stack individually, with both edges turned towards the centre on the same side. Z-fold sheets fold in alternating directions and interleave, helping present the next sheet when one is removed. Match either format to a suitable dispenser.
Are V-fold, Z-fold and interfold hand towels the same?
No. V-fold and Z-fold describe different fold arrangements. Interfold describes overlapping sheets in a stack and can apply to more than one fold type. Supplier terminology varies, so check folded dimensions and the stated dispenser compatibility.
Can I put Z-fold towels in a C-fold dispenser?
Only if the dispenser manufacturer lists the Z-fold format and dimensions as suitable. Some dispensers accept more than one fold; others are designed for specific refills. Check the model’s guidance before ordering a full carton.
How do I measure hand towels for a dispenser?
Measure the width and depth of a correctly folded sheet or bundle. Record the dispenser model and the code of a refill that already works. An unfolded sheet size describes the usable towel, but it does not confirm the folded stack will fit.
Are 2-ply hand towels always better than 1-ply?
Ply is the number of paper layers. Two-ply towels often feel more substantial, but fibre, sheet size and paper technology also affect performance. Compare compatible products and the number of sheets users actually need to dry their hands.
Which hand towels should I buy for a school or busy office?
Start with the installed dispensers, then compare refilling frequency, sheet presentation, drying performance, carton storage and total usage. Keeping an approved refill list for each dispenser model makes repeat ordering easier across classrooms, staffrooms and washrooms.
Why do several hand towels come out together?
Check refill compatibility, loading direction, stack alignment and the dispenser’s fill guidance. A compressed, overfilled or damp stack can dispense poorly. If correct loading does not solve it, follow the dispenser manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.
Can I buy paper hand towels in bulk from AOS?
Yes. AOS supplies commercial cartons and offers multibuy pricing on selected lines. For regular or multi-site purchasing, send your current product codes, dispenser details and expected quantities so the team can discuss suitable products and a quotation.
